Joey's journey:

Wow!  I never dreamed of owning my own business when I rolled onto Eastern Kentucky University's campus as a freshman many years ago.  Neither did I dream of

graduating with honors with a counseling/administration masters degree!  Matter of fact, as a college freshman I was on an "at risk list," at risk to not return my sophomore year due to having such a low grade point average from High School.  Having no clear goal, low grades and actually "feeling" behind academically, I had only one thing holding me in school: I wanted to be a leader who made a difference in the world.  I literally wanted to help change the world!  I just didn't know how to get "there," wherever "there" was.  I had a dream buried in my heart but was so scared of sharing it; the dream wouldn't surface until five and a half years later (that's right, I was on the 5.5 plan!) just a month before graduation.

As I sat in the office of one of the Universities most trusted high ranking officer’s I begin to share my dream as she began to ask really good questions.  These were great questions about my future that would have really helped me if someone would have asked me 5.5 years earlier!  After much in trepidation I begin sharing with the official, "I want to be a motivational speaker and consultant someday!"  It felt like I let a load of bricks off of my shoulders.  I did it, I told someone and now I just knew I would receive wise counsel on how to begin preparing for this career.  "Mr. Sammons, I hate to bust your balloon BUT (here it goes) that's not realistic, you need a real job!"  WOW!  I couldn't believe it.  I was told I should go after my Master's degree and work for the University.  I just couldn't at that point; I was so weary of tests, project's, papers, etc...

I landed a job for two years in corporate America, working for headquarters of a large oil company in their "accounting" department.  Yes, I did graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.  How did I end up in accounting in a large oil company?  I had no clear plan.  Actually I had a plan but had a very low self image, low enough that when someone shot down my idea it died (temporarily).  The one thing I did have (one area I had clearly discovered while in college; we teach there are Five major life areas at Sammons coaching) I discovered exactly who I was spiritually and where I wanted to go spiritually in the next 5, and even 50+ years!  I was excited but still had anxiety about what would I “put my hands to accomplishing.”  After spending the next two years working as a child therapist I took the University officials advice to “go back into Higher Education as a career and Master’s degree pursuit.”  Once again, I was allowing the circumstances of life to bump me around like a ping pong ball.  I spent the next 8 years achieving success in the field of Higher Education as a professional and as a campus minister until I finally landed what I thought would be my dream job at a ranking University.  After three months into the job I realized I had spent the past 14 years (working as a student and a professional) working in a career field that was not my choice/dream.

After sulking about 2 months I begin reading like a mad man, and searching and trying to apply my graduate career counseling classes.  Then I remembered the one principle that has helped me more than any other while pursuing my master’s in counseling, “never try to counsel/coach your self.”  This was when I invested into the services of a professional life coach.  It was only a matter of a few weeks that my old college dream re-surfaced, except this time my mind was saying “GO NOW,” flashing like a bright neon sign!

After several months of final certification and preparing I launched joeysammons.com, Sammons coaching/motivational speaking.  My blood pressure dropped from 175/90 to 120/75!  No kidding.  The strange thing that did happen was that I found those mentors I had gained in my "dream job" in Higher Education were extremely proud of me for pursuing coaching.  I had assumed when they found out about my new search my job would be in jeapordy, it was just the opposite.  Matter of fact the Assistant Vice President said, "Joey, as a result of your dedicated service we want to help you and support you.  We would love if you stayed in the field, however, you have to make your own decisions."  I share that story with caution, I realize when an employee shares with an employer their current job search/investigation it can typically create an immediate invitation to the unemployment office; it was just the opposite in my case.  I felt nothing but support, it was like doors were opened for me when I begin to puruse my passion in life; I merely had to find the strength to walk through those doors.

One of my clients recently made a statement that sums up my last 14 years, “oh, so you are just doing the same thing you were doing the past 14 years, except you just went private.”  Yes!  I have been coaching students for almost 14 years and I LOVE it!  Now, I want to open that opportunity up to anyone while I exercise my strengths in providing people hope by helping them discover their purpose in life, and intentionally live it out.

Whether you are at a cross roads in life like Joey was and you feel you are experiencing a mid-life crisis or just starting out in High School or College, Joey has the experience to help you achieve real success in life.   Or, if you are a business/University staff that needs an injection of life into the company/University staff Joey guarantee’s to leave a lasting impression that will catapult your staff to the next level of success!  Don’t put off investing into your life/your companies life any longer!  That’s right, coaching is an investment not an expense!  An investment into you!  Because we want to help YOU get to where you want/need to go in life.  Where will you/your company be in 6 months if you don’t pursue coaching?  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
